Laureates Call for Release of Iranian Opposition Leaders

The presidential rivals of Mr Ahmadinezhad, Messrs Musavi and Karrubi, and Mr Musavi’s wife, Mrs Zahra Rahnavard, have been under house arrest for over a year without trial or possibility of defence and in contravention of Iranian national law and human rights norms.

February 14 marks the one-year anniversary of the house arrest of the presidential rivals of Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinezhad.  Shirin Ebadi, in conjunction with her fellow Laureates of the Nobel Women’s Initiative, released a statementcalling for their release:

“The presidential rivals of Mr Ahmadinezhad, Messrs Musavi and Karrubi, and Mr Musavi’s wife, Mrs Zahra Rahnavard, have been under house arrest for over a year without trial or possibility of defence and in contravention of Iranian national law and human rights norms. The Nobel Women’s Inititiative expresses its opposition to the detention of the aforementioned and calls for their unconditional release.  The NWI also urges all freedom-loving people and human rights organisations throughout the world not to remain indifferent to the fate of the prisoners of conscience in Iran, in particular the aforementioned individuals, and to employ every means at their disposal to secure their release.”
