Quotes Ticker

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has. (Margaret Mead)                   Be the change you want to see in the world. (Mohatma Gandhi)                   To think is easy. To act is hard. But the hardest thing in the world is to act, in accordance with your thinking. (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)                   Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting results. (Albert Einstein)                   The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. (Bertrand Russell)

The 62 men in the study spent an average of three years at Guantanamo. Most were classified as enemy combatants before being released without charges, like two-thirds of the 775 men who have been held at the naval base. Of the 255 remaining prisoners, 23 have been charged with war crimes.

Discussion Point & Letters Letters: Alice Walker to Obama … Advice to be Lived

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. I would further advise you not to take on other people's enemies. Most damage that others do to us is out of fear, humiliation and pain.

If Europe sent a neutral force to the region and helped put real pressure on Congo and neighbouring countries with UN and African officials, this humanitarian crisis could be addressed and a lasting peace made possible.

HAT TP Articles: Yes, You Can!

If the new American administration decides to reassess the American national interest in the Middle East and comes to the conclusion that Israeli-Arab peace is an essential requirement of the American post-Bush policy, then the new President must inform our new Prime Minister of this fact and ask politely but unequivocally for a freeze on the settlements and a start of new negotiations - this time not just to fill time, but to attain final agreement in 2009.

The trick will be to move the ethic of local activism into the decisions of national government; and that, oddly enough, may be aided by the realisation that has dawned during the financial crisis that most of us had been looking after ourselves, rather than each other.

Solidarity with National Movements TP Articles: The Toronto Palestine Film Festival

It's been three generations of Israel trying very deliberately and systematically to destroy Palestinian life and culture. We don't know how much the world has missed out on because of all this destruction. But we do know this, anyone who went to the TPFF knows this: that after 60 years, after walls and massacres and assassinations, after every bureaucratic humiliation available, after the theft of land and water, after the bombing of civilians and the destruction of homes, the targeting of cultural centers and the destruction of archives, apartheid has, in the quest to stifle Palestinian creativity and culture, totally, spectacularly, utterly, failed.
